One of my favorite movies is a Tom Cruise movie called The Last Samurai. I like the fact that in this movie the Samurai appreciate the importance of "a good death". We really have no concept of the fact that death is a part of life and comes to all of us eventually, and does not need to be put off permanently.

I totally agree, Dakota. He was a figure who had lost all sense of reality and moral clarity. I also hope that those who looked up to him are willing to learn from his many and tragic mistakes.

As you know David, I don't think Scripture affirms or denies a moral "high-ground" for abstaining from politics. I don't believe politics can solve our problems or bring about our salvation, however, I do believe we can be active within the political sphere without endangering our souls. ;-)

In response to your poll question, yes I'm tired of public trials. I think it would be much better to have trials in secret again w/o juries and all that other nonsense, like due process. Make things more efficient. Or maybe what we're really sick of is the fact that the each news organization overloads us with "in-depth" stories as it vies with its competitors for viewer-/readership. Perhaps we also secretly long for the days when news took longer to travel, as opposed to the instant "news" we get through television, radio and the internet.

ooOOoo... Dakota has a blog! (This is not a constructive comment. This is just an excited statement-of-the-obvious from someone who likes to stalk her friends' websites.)

This is more or less a hit-and-run in terms of comments, because I just wanted to air this side, which I know you don't agree with. Instead of being so opposed to all this lack of integrity and character as a Republican or on political grounds, wouldn't the high ground (yes, that's an exclusive absolute) rather be that we should be opposed to having politicians in the house of God, defaming His Name and trying to baptize the bloodstains on their hands and the filth in their hearts, all the while sharing drinks with the devil at the Pentagon bar? Just a few thoughts from the Reformed Anabaptist. :)

Part of it may be that we associate "freedom" with certain activities (and thus we cheer for cheesy country music), but that doesn't mean that those activities equal freedom. Which is, I think, where the distinction you make becomes key. Good points.
